A Modern Trinidadian Twist: The Story Behind Rain Eatery

Every dish at Rain Eatery starts with the same idea: when you dine with us, you dine with family. It is not a slogan we invented for a menu — it is the way we were fed growing up, and the way we cook today on Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn.

From a Trinidadian kitchen to Brooklyn

Rain Eatery grew out of a Trinidadian home kitchen, the kind where a pot of curry is always half-finished on the stove and the smell of toasted geera meets you at the door. Trinidad's food is a conversation between continents — African, Indian, Chinese, Amerindian and European influences all folded into one plate. We carried that conversation north, and set it down in a corner of Brooklyn that already speaks a dozen Caribbean dialects.

The name came from the island's rhythm. Rain in Trinidad is not an inconvenience; it is relief, it is the thing that makes everything grow. We wanted a restaurant that felt like that — nourishing, generous, and a little bit alive.

Why seafood, why pescatarian

We chose to build the menu around the sea for two reasons. The first is heritage: island cooking has always leaned on what the water provides. The second is care. The ingredients we carefully select are meant to nourish our bodies and elevate our minds, and a seafood-forward, pescatarian kitchen let us cook food that feels as good the next morning as it does at the table.

The various seafood selections come from large and flourishing bodies of water — chosen for quality, and for the future of the water itself.

That decision also made room for something we care about deeply: a table where nobody is left out. By designing every section of the menu with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options, we made sure a whole family — with all its different needs — could still share a meal.

The modern twist

We are proud of tradition, but we are not a museum. The "modern twist" is in the technique and the plating as much as the flavours: brighter, lighter starts; careful cooking of pristine fish; classic curries treated with a lighter hand so the spice sings instead of shouts. The green seasoning is still made from scratch. The scotch bonnet is still fresh. But the plate in front of you belongs to today.

Family, still

As we have grown — adding catering, private events, and our Curry Rain pop-ups — the through-line has never moved. Our intimate staff works to make every visit remarkable, and we still cook like the people across the table are our own. That is the whole story, really. Come sit down, and you will taste it.
